There's no doubt about it, we're in this line of work because it's one hell of a rush, but what causes the spark of excitement to burn out when the job in essence hasn’t changed. What changed?
In short, we're very good at shooting ourselves in the foot and it happens over and over again. Nothing will remove the fun from your flying faster than Poor Financial Decisions. In this day and age of instant gratification we get caught up with buying stuff when we really can't afford it or really don't need it. String a few of those purchases together and the snowball starts to roll.
How does this effect your flying? Simply put it's huge and leads to Debt Stress. It doesn't go away, it's follows your every move, your every thought. There's only one cure and most people opt for the wrong one... they buy more stuff. The only solution is to get rid of the debt.
You've got yourself through all the training, taken hours getting your network going so you can get your career started, don't go and ruin it with buying unnecessary stuff with your freshly printed paycheck.
A senior pilot friend once said something that changed how I tackle everything.
'WHATEVER IT IS YOU DO, MAKE IT COUNT'
What you're doing, is it working in your favour or is it backing you into a corner?
Interesting studies have shown that once you get to 'enough', spending more doesn't actually give you any more happiness. Getting to know your 'enough' could be the most important lifestyle choice you could ever make.
Keep that smile on your dial. Don't make going to work all about earning money to pay bills or it'll very quickly become just another job and you'll loose the excitement of why you started to fly in the first place.
Keep it safe out there boys and girls.
Thanks for stopping by.
Just my experiences as a pilot in Africa, things learnt along the way and useful stuff for others following their dream...
